When Is Stomach Ulcer Surgery Necessary?

Stomach ulcer surgery is one last resort way of trying to rid the stomach of ulcers which can be extremely painful and even highly dangerous. There are other ways of attempting to eradicate stomach ulcers, both natural and synthetic, and surgery really is a last resort option for when all else has failed or for when there are complications which need to be dealt with. This surgery is less common than it was in the past, but it is still a viable alternative to the mainstream treatments.

The most common type of treatment for peptic ulcers now is drug therapy, with H2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors proving effective in eliminating the Helicobacter pylori bacteria which are now know to be responsible for stomach ulcers. These drugs do have their downsides, in that they create acidity in the bloodstream and the stomach which can aggravate this painful condition. Keeping the stomach in an alkaline state is one way of combating the pain caused by acid reflux and poor digestion, which often accompany stomach ulcers, but the drug therapies make this difficult. This is why there are more people than ever before turning away from drugs and to natural remedies.

There are even people within the medical profession itself who treat stomach ulcers with nothing more than natural substances. One of these is Mastic Gum, which has the rare merit of being able to kill off strains of Helicobacter pylori. Many ulcer patients have been treated exclusively with Mastic Gum, although it has no abilities beyond that of killing the bacteria. New Zealand Manuka Honey is also effective in combating stomach ulcers, and this does have some recuperative powers for the stomach. Using these substances in conjunction with the highly alkaline apple cider vinegar has allowed many people to cure their own stomach ulcers.

There are cases which will have progressed to a level where stomach ulcer surgery may be the only way to permanently remove the damage. It also has to be remembered that ulcers are potentially fatal if the stomach wall becomes perforated, so there are times when action needs to be quickly taken. With the use of stomach surgery ulcer damaged areas can be removed and the lining be fundamentally repaired. There are very few cases which would be bad enough to warrant the removal of the entire stomach wall and lining.

Ulcers are more dangerous than many people realize, and mortality rates can become significantly higher when the disease is advanced. The stomach wall may perforate leaving no barrier between the digestive system and the eliminatory one. These high mortality rates justify the use of extreme surgical techniques, but there are ways of using new technology to make the operation safer. In case where part of the stomach wall needs to be removed, there is a possibility to use something known as laparoscopic surgery. This involves the use of small incisions and is far less invasive.

The number of cases where stomach ulcer surgery is prescribed is falling as the medical profession increasingly turns to drug treatments to deal with ulcers. Also, more people are treating them using natural methods. In those cases where surgery is the right answer, the future will see a move towards laparoscopic surgical techniques which will reduce fatalities and allow surgery to be available to frail people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to undergo surgical treatment. The traditional surgery for ulcers is likely to become virtually obsolete in the coming decade as more effective and safer treatments take over. More trained surgeons will be needed to administer stomach ulcer surgery.
