Why Stomach Reduction Surgery Is A Last Resort
Stomach reduction surgery is one way of attempting to deal with the problem of chronic obesity, a problem which is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout Western society. So much of the food which is consumed in the West is either in an altered form which the body finds difficult to digest, or it is riddled with excess fat, salt or sugar. It is scarcely surprising that obesity is becoming an epidemic when you consider that many of the substances are addictive to a degree and that people typically eat too much anyway.
Surgery is, of course, an extreme way of dealing with what is a simple problem in many cases. Unless there is an underlying medical complication, it should be possible to restore the body to optimum weight and shape by diet and exercise, and this should always be attempted before surgery is resorted to. Many people are frustrated to the point of despair by their inability to lose weight, and this often stems from following the type of poor advice which is given out in cheap magazine articles designed to get you to lose weight quickly. This invariably involves starvation diets and an attempt to cut calories to the minimum, which is an unworkable strategy.
If you have followed these unworkable strategies and ended up frustrated by actually putting on weight as a result, you are in a very large majority. It will be worth your while to try to follow sound dietary principles and to lose weight naturally before you give up and resort to surgery. The way to lose weight and keep it off is to replace empty junk food calories with nutritious food the body actually needs, and to start a gentle exercise program which will allow you to burn fat and get rid of some of the excess weight stored in your body.
If there is a reason why this plan will not work in your case, either because of a psychological addiction to some form of junk food or a physical problem with your metabolism, then stomach reduction surgery is one possible way around the problem. As with any other surgery there are risks and potential complications involved, from the anesthetic to the recovery time at the end. Most of these operations are carried out using full invasive surgery, so there is a significant risk of hernia and of damage to organs close to the stomach area.
These problems are being greatly reduced by techniques which are now starting to take over the way stomach surgery is carried out. These techniques are known as laparoscopic or keyhole surgery, and they allow the surgeon to operate without the need to open up the body. Small incisions are made into the skin to allow precision instruments to be operated, and to allow for a camera to transmit pictures to a screen for the surgeon to see inside the body. There are many different operations carried out using laparoscopic surgery, but this is one of the most difficult.
If you are lucky enough to have access to stomach reduction surgery carried out using laparoscopic techniques, you will benefit from the reduced shock and stress placed upon the human body. You will find eating far less painful in the aftermath of the operation than you would have done otherwise, and you will be able to return to your daily work far more quickly. It is often possible for someone to leave hospital within a day or two of surgery taking place, and you will be ready to work again far more quickly than would have been possible with standard stomach reduction surgery.
