Help Yourself Recover From Stomach Cancer Surgery
Stomach cancer surgery is one of the last resort procedures which can extend the life of a sufferer for a long time after it would normally have ended. It is not something to be undergone lightly, even when it is clear that life will end without it relatively quickly. There are usually alternative treatments which at least have some chance of lessening the pain and extending life to some degree, but surgery is the only way to guarantee that the offending tissue will be removed.
There is one fact which is certain about surgery to remove the stomach, and that is that there is no going back. Once you have committed to this course of action, that will be the end of the questioning for the rest of your life. It is imperative to be sure that there is no other option which could solve the problem in a more natural and less dangerous way. Cancer has often been successfully fought using natural methods of diet and lifestyle change, the removing of carcinogens from the environment and the alkalizing of the bloodstream. Even if no cure is effected, the body will still be in a better state to cope with the ordeal of surgery than it would otherwise be.
It is also absolutely essential to remove as many potential carcinogens from the immediate environment as possible, especially those which are routinely taken into the body. If it is possible to stop smoking, cut down alcohol consumption preferably to zero, and avoid the known carcinogens in your food you will be going a long way towards giving your body a fighting chance. There have even been complete recoveries occur when the bloodstream is made alkaline and all potential risk factors are removed from the system, but these only occur if the disease is caught in the early stages.
Should it come to the point where stomach cancer surgery is obviously necessary there are several possibilities. The first and most obvious is the complete removal of the stomach, and this has both good and bad points. The risk of the cancer coming back at some point in the future is greatly reduced if the entire organ is removed, but this does not guarantee that another part of the body will not be affected. Total stomach removal is a heavy duty operation which will demand strength on the part of the patient, and a long recovery time in any case.
It is now possible for surgery to be carried out with out the complete removal of the stomach. There are techniques using modern technology which can remove the part of the lining which has been affected with a tumor, leaving the rest of the stomach in place. In this case, it is vital to make sure that all of the cancer is caught in the part of the lining which is being removed. Even when this is done, the risk of a further cancer developing is higher than if the entire organ had been removed.
The upside is that this restricted form of stomach cancer surgery can be recovered from more quickly and easily, although this is only relative. Unless laparoscopic techniques are used to reduce the size of the incision made into the body there is still going to be a high degree of shock. In any case there will be a need to protect the body from pollutants as far as it is humanly possible. If you can buy organically grown food and eliminate chemicals from your household cleaning you will greatly increase your chances of long term survival after stomach cancer surgery.
