When Stomach Surgery Becomes The Best Solution
Stomach surgery is among the most effective ways of preventing severe obesity from becoming life threatening, and it can work in cases which have defied every other approach. It can be considered crude in that it is the most direct way possible of making sure that the stomach is simply unable to consume any more food, and it is certainly not risk free as it involves invasive surgery. The small risk which is involved, however, can be more than worth taking if the patient has tried other methods and found them wanting.
Before you consider stomach surgery weight loss methods of a more conventional nature should already have been tried and exhausted. There is no doubt that the best way to lose weight is naturally and gradually, with a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise. No matter how obese you may have become, it is possible in theory to reach your ideal weight over time. Of course, none of this takes psychological factors or potential addictions into account, and there are many reasons in the real world why the natural solution may not be a possible one. It should be tried at first, though, before more drastic measures are even contemplated.
The dieting approach to obesity is far more likely to work if it does not involve crash dieting or an attempt to lose weight while not giving the body the nutrients it needs. An approach of switching from unhealthy foods overloaded with fat and refined sugar to healthier and more nutritionally balanced foods is far more likely to work, and the risks associated with such a method are as low as they can possibly be. There is likely to be some improvement in health in any case. In the best case scenario, it will make stomach surgery for weight loss completely unnecessary.
There is also a good psychological reason for attempting to diet first. Unless you have tried to lose weight in this safest possible way, you will never be sure whether or not you could have succeeded, and this will constantly prey on your mind as you go through any surgical procedure and its after effects. You will face surgery in a far better state of mind if you are convinced that it is necessary. Even if you have tried dieting on many occasions before and failed, give it one more chance following a regime of healthy eating and smaller but more frequent meals.
If it proves impossible to lose weight in this manner, then something more drastic may be necessary, especially if there is a serious immediate threat to health. When you know and understand the risks, and you know these risks are lower than the risks involved with not having the surgery, you are mentally ready to proceed. It may be possible to make progress with a mini or small bariatric operation, and this will carry less risk than the full blown operation which leaves only ten percent of the stomach available for food.
If the full procedure becomes necessary, the risks to health and the possibility of death can be greatly reduced by the use of laparoscopic surgical techniques. These have been the most popular way to carry out this operation for over twenty years, even though it requires a high degree of skill and dexterity on behalf of the surgeon. It is one of the most difficult surgical operations to perform, and this fact alone ensures that it will never be cheap or easily available. The expenses are reduced, however, by the fact that the length of the hospital stay needed is far less with laparoscopic stomach surgery.
The use of advanced keyhole techniques greatly reduces the time taken to recover from the operation, as well as the risk of a potential fatality. There will inevitably be some scarring in any surgical procedure, but this is also reduced to a minimum. A patient undergoing this surgery will be able to return to work and become an active member of the community again within a matter of weeks, and the weight loss will occur quickly and effectively. There will still be a need to eat nutritionally rich food to attain optimal health, but even if junk food is eaten the weight loss will still occur.
The stomach surgery will make it virtually impossible to overeat without causing severe discomfort, and the patient is likely to feel full with only minimal ingestion of food. The best results in terms of overall health will still be obtained by switching to a healthier style of eating, and this will often happen when the patient is encouraged by the weight loss they experience. If the diet does improve, this will greatly improve the chances of the weight staying off once the surgery is reversed, eliminating the need for further stomach surgery.
